There are several reasons why we are able to provide this comprehensive course in six days, while other guide training courses may require eight or ten days.
- Our maximum group size is 8 participants on the Clayoquot Sound courses and 6 participants on the Queen Charlotte Islands courses. Our student to instructor ratios are the smallest on the coast. With fewer participants, our instructors are more accessible and are able to spend additional one-on-one time with each student.
(Other courses may accept 10 or more participants.)
- We have two certified guide instructors plus one assistant guide/cook on each course. Our staff provides an incredible diversity and wealth of experiences, unmatched by other courses on the west coast of Canada.
(Other courses may have only one instructor plus an assistant.)
- We provide all food and employ a full time cook on each of our courses. This unique combination creates vastly more time each day for the group to participate in valuable learning opportunities.
(Other courses may require participants to provide and/or prepare meals, which consumes several hours of each day that could otherwise be devoted to course material.)
- We provide Seaward Tyee TX single kayaks. Single kayaks greatly enhance each participant’s independence, as well as their ability to practice advanced paddling and leadership techniques.
(Other courses may rent double kayaks, or a mixed fleet of doubles and singles.)
Certified leadership courses are intensive learning situations, regardless of their duration. Our experiences with providing longer courses have shown us that after six days, participants may become saturated, which sometimes results in diminished learning abilities. Our six-day format is long enough to cover all the skills and information necessary, yet not so long as to overwhelm participants with too much material.
Please conact us if you have any questions about the format of our course.
